Don’t be Spooked that it’s past October 31st

Halloween time may have passed, but don’t let that scare you. There is still plenty of time to care for your pond or complete a project.

Pond Care:
This is a great time of year to be putting pond netting over your pond to protect it from leaves and debris.

This is also a great time of year to be emptying your skimmer nets more often, cleaning your filters and making sure your pump is free of obstructions.

Be Prepared:
Although it’s isn’t time to shutdown your pond and pull your pump yet, it is time to make sure you have what you need for fall. Depending on your climate you may still need more liquid bacteria or Pond Vive. Additionally you should make sure your de-icer or aerator is working and ready for the season.
Does your pond need 1 more Big Clean Up? If so do it the right way with the Pond Monsta !

Projects:
It is not too late, in fact Fall is actually an easy time of year to complete outdoor projects and a great time to be outside.

On my soap box – “The 2 best things”…

Anyone who has talked with me or listened to me blab on the phone has heard me say “that the 2 best things you can do for your pond are to provide aeration and to add beneficial bacteria”.
It is true and any pond expert will tell you the same thing. The issues that stem for nutrient overload in your pond are what cause all the unsightly algae, weeds and muck – not to mention the odor, fish stress, disease or even fish kill.

Pollutants such as leaves, clippings, fish poop and un-dissolved fish food and fertilizer sink to the bottom and decay, stripping the water of dissolved oxygen. Anaerobic bacteria, which require no oxygen, can thrive in this environment. These bacteria can cause poisonous gases such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane to be released. As these gases rise through the water, any remaining oxygen is absorbed causing unpleasant odors and rapid algae growth. This is a leading cause of most fish kills.
Both Aeration and Beneficial Bacteria work to combat breakdown these nutrients, remove sludge and improve water clarity. Providing a clean and healthy pond from top to bottom.

Our 2011 product offering is better than ever!

We are very excited about our new unique products and our product improvements.
As always you can expect a great value from us along with the best in customer service.

Let’s start with a few New offerings.
One of the most exciting and popular new products is our Vianti Falls Kits. These half basins are fantastic for indoor and outdoor. These kits come with everything you need.

We have also added to our Formal Wall Fountain offering with a new product that also includes a pond.

Next is the new EasyPro bead filter - This filter is very well priced and built like a tank. It has higher flow than other brands.

Now on to our product improvements.
The EP-Series waterfall pumps have been replaced by the TM & TB Series pumps. EasyPro has re-designed them for better flow, efficiency and service life. They also come with a 30′ cord and a 2 year warranty !
The leading TH Series pumps are still available as well.

Lastly we have added an option to our larger earthen pond aeration offerings. Traditionally we have only sold GAST compressors in our kits. GAST build great products and we will still be proudly selling them. We have added an option of an EasyPro Stratus compressor. These compressors have been through tough testing and have performed with flying colors. This offering is limited to our rocking piston line up, but now we have several sizes to choose from. In addition they have a 2 Year Warranty !

Just A Falls

That looks fantastic, just look at how the water falls from step to step.
Tom Carney had a vision to build a water feature into his hillside at his home in North Carolina. He purchased a Just a Falls kit from us and within a few days after receiving it he sent us this picture – wow!

I can’t wait to see what it looks like in the spring and summer when all of the color comes back to the plant life.
Tom is also planning on installing some of our lighting next spring so that he can furthermore enjoy this water feature in the evening hours while adding a new visual effect.

Fall – Falling – Fallen – Get Ready for Winter

Fall has arrived, if you have not already it is time to prepare your pond for the rest of fall and winter. Pond netting, aeration and deicers are important items to consider.

Pond Netting:
If you are in a wooded area or in an area where you get a lot of leaves from the wind netting is a must.

The netting comes in two different sizes. 3/8” is best for needles, small seeds, nuts and berries. 3/4” is best for larger leaves. The netting can be placed over the pond and staked around the perimeter or tented over the pond. Tenting is commonly done with PVC pipe, fittings and stakes. Tenting prevents the leaves from getting wet and is easier to blow the leaves off. Inner tubes can also be used in water gardens to float the netting.. Floating the tubes in the pond and then covering with netting will help prevent the netting and leaves from getting wet and sagging in the pond. If many leaves collect on the netting it may weigh the netting down and the leaves may set in the water. If this happens you will need to get the leaves off the netting and out of the water. If left in the water they will begin to decompose and release unneeded nutrients into the pond causing lots of problems.
Water garden de-Icers :
De-Icers keep an opening in the ice. These units will not heat the water, they keep a small area open usually enough to let out harmful gases and keep fish safe. If you loose power for a period of time the ice will freeze in pretty quickly and usually need to be chopped out for it to work properly.
Water garden Air Bubblers:
Air bubblers will supply your pond with oxygen and are easy to maintain through all of the seasons. They will typically keep an a hole open in the ice. In extremely cold conditions the pond may look froze over but it will actually be “honeycombed” so gases can still escape.

Aeration in Large Ponds:
When ice covers a pond and snow then covers the ice light rays are not able to penetrate and help produce oxygen. Gasses are not able to escape and this is very detrimental to a pond and you may loose fish. As a pond ages the risk gets higher from added decomposing plant materials that will us up all the oxygen left in a pond causing a fish kill. Aeration will provide the necessary oxygen, speed up decomposition and allow gases to escape.

Aeration Pond Tips to Maximize the Potential of Your Pond

As many areas around the country face record heat it’s time to talk about how this summer weather is affecting your backyard pond. Whether you have a small ornamental pond or a large lake or pond you can expect to have trouble with algae, pond odor or low oxygen. I want to offer a few aeration pond suggestions for improving the quality of your pond, bringing back clear, sparkling water with a clean fresh smell – a healthy pond.

Aeration
Aeration, simply put, is the process of bringing oxygen into the water. Warm temperatures cause the surface water to become warm trapping the colder, denser water at the bottom of the pond. The debris; leaves, animal matter, and other organic matter sinks to the bottom and decays.
The decaying process causes a reduction in available oxygen, leading to the growth of anaerobic bacteria which causes various poisonous gases; hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and methane. The gases rise through the water bringing unpleasant odors and algae growth. They can kill fish and damage pond plants. It’s unsightly and an all around unpleasant situation for the pond owner at a time when you want to enjoy your outdoor environment.
Introducing oxygen to the pond restores the necessary oxygen that the fish and pond needs and helps the sludge and nutrients on the bottom to decompose faster.

There are different ways to aerate your pond or water garden.
For water gardens you can use a small fountain or a small diffuser system.

Larger ponds require a different approach.

Depending on the pond size, depth and the customers wishes for only aeration or aeration with a fountain that could result in 3 different manners to aerate.

For shallower ponds (8′ deep or less) there is nothing more efficient at getting the job done than a surface aerator.
For deeper ponds over 8′ deep the best method to aerate the entire depth of water is to use a diffuser type system that releases air at the bottom of the pond to de-stratify the water and add needed oxygen.
The other option is a fountain, fountains are excellent in providing aeration to any pond, but they can only work as far down as about 7 – 8″ in depth. They are a great choice for providing both aeration and bauty. Even in deep ponds they do an excellent job of keeping water moving and keeping the surface of the pond clear and enjoyable.

Beneficial Pond Bacteria
The 2 best things you can do for any pond is to aerate and supplement with beneficial bacteria. Pond Vive is a specialized blend and is designed to remove excess gases and nutrients as well as reduce pond sludge.
All ponds contain bacteria, some of it is what we call anaerobic bacteria, which does not need oxygen and some is called ‘beneficial pond bacteria’. As the name would suggest, this beneficial type of bacteria works along the pond bottom to digest the decayed matter without causing further harm to the water environment. We recommend using Pond-Vive every 2 weeks, when the water temperature is above 55 F to improve the quality of your pond.
If you have a large amount of muck or sludge on the bottom of you pond use the slightly modified version of Pond Vice that focuses on sludge. Sludge Remover Pellets are another way to introduce beneficial pond bacteria into a lake or pond. The pellets sink directly to the bottom and will target the specific area; it’s considered the best treatment for larger bodies of water, near docks and in swimming areas.
